Alice Shutting Down

I am using Alice 3.1 in an Introduction to Programming class I am teaching. My program shuts down any time I try to add a child or a random person to the scene.

I can add an elder, adult, teen, or toddler but when I do the face of that person is a different color than their skin color - usually black or grey.

The software was installed by my IT department. Is there an error with the installation or my settings? It's starting to get frustrating and I don't want to go back to using Alice 2.2.
