PacMan Trouble

Working on a PacMac game but am having some trouble with defining the parameters of the game board. Inside the board there are walls and I know how to make it so that you cannot travel through a wall heading from one direction or by using the within threshold method, but that results in a circular avoidance. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make it so that it can check the same object from all directions at the same time?

You could use the "distance to the left of", right of, above etc functions perhaps. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "every direction", that's a bit ambiguous.
