Question New To Alice And Linux - 08-16-2008, 06:07 PM

I will be starting college in a week and Alice is my first programing experience ever. I already have my books. I was given an old PC with an Intel Celeron 500MHZ CPU in it which has Xubuntu Linux installed on it.
The cd that came with the textbook assumes you are using Windows. I downloaded Alice for Linux, but now how do I install it? I am learning Linux on my own at the moment untill my college class in it starts in a semester or so.
At this time I do not have access to a Windows PC, which is ok with me. I am tired of viruses, spyware, malware, and security issues anyway. Thank you for the help.

I suggest you search the forum and look at the experiences many people have reported with Linux - then follow the instructions that most closely match your setup. Pay particular attention to both the version of Xubuntu you have (there are many) and the version of the Java support environment you are using. Both seem to be critical for Linux to work properly - and not a lot of people have succeeded in getting a really good setup.

I would also be concerned about the hardware capabilities of your machine. I often run on an old laptop with XP, a 1.4 GHz processor and 240 MB of RAM. For even moderately sized Alice programs, that configuration is quite marginal.

Good Luck.

Just begun my Alice "adventure". Decided the best thing would be to find a bit of info before trying to get it going on Linux. I would say you're right, DrJim, about running (or attempting to run) Alice on anything slower than a 1Gig processor and less than half a gig of RAM... even tho the Linux kernel will run with less overhead than any MS O/S, the Java and Alice demands on the system are likely to make it a frustrating experience. Someone just stepping into Linux will have challenge enough just getting THAT to do things the way you want.

My ~attempt~ will be with FC-6 and an Intel board, 2.4G Pentium and 0.5G RAM.

...and I suspect I'll be posting a LOT of: "NOW whadda ya think I should do?!?!" posts in here.
