In my own personal opinion, I like scratch better (I guess because I spent more time using it) and although it is not 3D, it is easy to start off using to create a game! Hope all goes well with the students! Best of Luck!

A good program for middle school students is "FPS Creator" found at http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2001
or
http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2127 This has great graphics.
But this is not the free approach to it.

I also think that Scratch is simpler and easier to use and make games with. But you can really only make 2D games in Scratch. If you are looking to create 3D games then Alice is a great option!

Only if you're good at resource management.

After experimenting with other engines I found out that aside from the somewhat hard to learn drag-and-drop interface and the outdated rendering engine, Alice isn't that different from other 3d engines out there. This means if you can design a game that isn't computer intensive (e. g. tower defense, puzzle, point-and-click adventure) or simply scale down intensive game designs (e. g. make a one-room fps with only three enemies at a time on screen), you're good to go. RP was like that in that it had no player motion other than rotation and therefore needed no collision detection. Same goes for SB, which used primarily 2d graphics.

In fact, Alice could be useful as a tool to teach experienced developers how to work with limited resources. I know there's at least one contest that rewards developers for making big things that come in small packages.

Does anyone have any idea how I can use Alice for a online class for game design? I have my own online education platform here at http://www.tuitionbean.com and have been racking my brains since the start of this year on how to start a game design class there.

Panel of experts over here please advice me D:

You could use it as a basic course, as it does not function as an stand alone game platform.

Stuff + Other Stuff + Different Other Stuff = Things :)

My best Alice game:

Clash of the Cubes (an arena fighting game):
