Reducing File Size

How do I reduce the size of a file? I don't mean compression.
ex: I have a file that is 40 mb. I've seen a much more complex program that has about 8.

On a related note, do different commands (loop, do together, etc.) taked up different amounts of memory? If so, how much?

Does your file have music? That tends to take up a lot of space.

I've noticed that saving the world under a different name often reduces the file size. Not sure why. Re-using objects and using pictures instead of models works well, too.
