Default Alice in Windows 8 - 12-04-2012, 06:01 AM

We have installed and are running both Alice 2.3 and Alice 3.1 on a new Windows 8 machine (a Dell "All in One" with wireless mouse and keyboard. Also, it has a touch screen). Both are "alive and well" and working just fine in Windows 8.

To install, we followed (and recommend) these steps:

1) Download the zipped file (Alice 2.3, universal zip for 3.1) to the desktop.
2) Unzip on the desktop.
3) Move the unzipped folder (containing all of Alice) to the Program Files (X86) folder on the C:\ drive.
4) Create a shortcut on the desktop to Alice.exe (Alice 2.3) or Alice3.bat (Alice 3.1).
5) Click the shortcut to start Alice.

By way of explanation: Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 all have a strong malware protection scheme that resists installing non-standard software directly on the hard drive. The best way we have found to work within this protection scheme is to unzip the Alice download on the desktop and then move it to the hard drive.

If you are working on a networked system, please consult the instructions on the Alice 2.x download page (on www.alice.org) for setting up the appropriate path for saving/loading files.

We do hope this is helpful.
