Alice 3.1/Java 7/Netbeans 7.3.1/Lubuntu 13.04 crashes for many students
 

Our CS1 class with about 150 students uses Alice/Netbeans for some labs. We give students a VM with Lubuntu, Java, Alice, and NetBeans installed. A trivial program ([url]http://cs46labs.bitbucket.org/cs46a/lab1/hello.zip[/url]) crashes for many students (but not for the instructors). I attach the error log.

The head of the stack trace is:

C [libc.so.6+0x3a94b] strtof_l+0xaab
j edu.cmu.cs.dennisc.nebulous.NebulousTexture.setup(Ljavax/media/opengl/GL;)V+0
j edu.cmu.cs.dennisc.nebulous.NebulousTexture.doSetup(Ljavax/media/opengl/GL;)V+31

Any ideas what might cause this, or how we might get the students to do their lab work?
