Search this forum for: Netbeans

All of the information you need has been posted including what files you need, where to download them, etc.

Good luck,

Good timing for this question. We have just put up a screencast on our blog on how to install the NetBeans plugin.

Once you have it installed, open up NetBeans.
- top level menu "File" -> "New Project" then
- choose "Java" category
- choose "Java Project from Existing Alice Project"
- for "Alice Project:" browse to the Alice project you want to import
- verify project name, location, folder fields suit your liking
- hit "Finish"
- you should have a project in NetBeans that is the Java code that is your Alice project

Does that help?

Best regards,

One tip on the install:

If you are installing in a lab be sure to tell NetBeans to put the plugins in a shared directory. If you don't you will be the only one able to use the plugins.

To install into a shared directory:

1) Choose Tools > Plugins to open the Plugins manager.
2) Click the Settings tab and then select Force install into shared directories.
3) Click the downloaded tab, and select the jogl and Alice plugins.
4) Select the Install checkbox for the plugin and click Install.

I missed the need to do step two when I watched the video. Oops.

I do get some errors when unprivileged users try to run their Alice projects in NetBeans. The errors indicates that NetBeans tries to write to the Windows registry and fails. But so far my simple projects have actually run, but the restart button does not work.

I will have to do some more investigation into this issue.

We've been running Alice 3 off of thumb drives for our computer club students - frequently we're in environments where the computer labs won't allow us to install any software at all. As long as they have a reasonably updated JDK installed, we're usually ok to run Alice 3 and Netbeans off of thumb drive. Obviously the shared folder installation makes more sense if you have access and permission for it. Thanks for posting and please let us know if you have any other or additional Netbeans questions.
