Alice on Ubuntu unusable Null pointer exceptions -

I installed Alice3Beta 3.0.0.2.10 on my son's netbook running Ubuntu 11.04. It installed and runs just fine, but whenever he tries to drag a procedure into his run area it causes a nullpointerexception. The null pointer exception originates in sun.swing.SwingUtilities2.getLeftSideBearing. Is this happening to anyone else? Maybe we have an incompatible Java version or something similar?
