It appears everyone is suddenly using Resident Penguin avatars. Why and when did this happen?

Someone copied X's avatar, I don't know why. Then everyone started copying X's avatar, thinking it was a bandwagon. Soon, people started putting their own changes into X's avatar.
Therefore, everyone is a zombie-slaying penguin.

Kiwis are more rare. Therefore more awesome than penguins. But penguins with guns? No. and Kiwi's don't go well with guns.
