Default Compile the Alice source - 06-12-2008, 02:56 PM

I have to make an alteration to Alice to complete a project I'm working on.
How do I go about compiling the Alice source code?

I looked at the files given on the Alice site, but it wasn't immediately apparent how it should be done. I am posting in the hope that someone can save some of my time.

Default Compile the Alice Source - 06-13-2008, 04:07 AM

In the General Discussion -> How Do I forum, I started a thread "Alice 2.0 and Java 5.0" http://www.alice.org/community/showt...hlight=compile where I attempted this and got very stuck. There seems to be quite a long dependency graph, including Jython. With 2.2 coming "soon" I think there may be others interested in this.

I am trying to compile Alice for Windows and have gotten past the native JNI stuff. Now I am working on compiling the Java code, but I'm having the same problems as you (hgs).
If I'm successful I'll post my method here.

After many hours looking up various libraries I discovered an easy solution. If you look in the Alice program's Required folder all the .jars you need are there.

What you need:
\Required\optionalPackagesLib\*.jar
\Required\externalLib\*.jar

I included these .jars in Eclipse then exported alice.jar to replace the one at "\Required\lib\alice.jar". Now I can modify the Java part of Alice.

(I am also using the old JRE 1.3 which you can download from the archives of Sun's site.)

I noticed something interesting in the code today:

I'm not sure if this is a joke, Easter egg or something that was actually used, but elements in Alice can be named the same thing, only if "GeorgeForeman" is used.

You have to right click an existing element and choose "rename" because the normal new-element-naming-dialog-box will override the Easter egg (or whatever it is).
