Install Alice 2.3 in Ubuntu 12.10

I have successfully installed and run Alice 3 in Ubuntu 12.10 but wish to install Alice 2.3 additionally.
I have downloaded the tar.gz file and placed it in its own directory.
When I change to that directory and use tar -xzvf Alice2.3b.tar.gz
a large number of files are extracted but
I get an error message
tar: Exiting with failure status owing to previous errors.

Can anyone help resolve this please?
