Default Alice community forums back at 100% (hopefully) - 11-09-2007, 03:47 PM

We have fixed the many issues that have plagued the forums over the past several weeks -- namely broken search and inability to view/attach attachments.

If you come across any forum issues, please post them here and we will try to get them fixed asap. There are still a few niggling issues that are the result of software upgrades that broke some custom content, but those shouldn't affect normal operation.

Everything I checked looks like it's back ok, including the simple shapes at http://www.alice.org/community/showt...=2025#post2025 .

Remember you have to import them as textures in .ase format if you want them to be sub-objects to an existing object - you then have to import a texture for each object if you want it. In .a2c format, the shapes only come in as world level objects.

Added Notes:
A couple of other interesting threads for newcomers:

Making simple transparent objects with Anim8or:
http://www.alice.org/community/showt...ghlight=biturn

Another thread on importing objects:
http://www.alice.org/community/showt...ghlight=biturn

Also be sure to check out Dick Baldwin's new tutorial on lighting.
http://www.dickbaldwin.com/alice/Alice0200.htm
That's one of the powerful interesting and useful features of Alice - but it has been minimally documented before now.

Finally, the thread on using Biturn to convert other 3D formats to .ase format is a bit hard to find. It is

Default Problems with NEW POSTS and QUICK LINKS/TODAY'S POSTS - 11-10-2007, 06:05 PM

I opened NEW POSTS followed by QUICK LINKS/TODAY'S POSTS about 6:00pm CST, and DrJim's post above didn't show up in either of them. I found it by visually scanning the summaries in the Alice Community display.

Dick,

I'm going to run some tests and search the vBulletin customer support forums to see if other bboards have come across this problem.

Email notifications are still broken. We think we've isolated the problem, so hopefully that will be fixed shortly.

Smile Help with forum - 11-29-2007, 09:25 PM

Hello to all. I am a newbie here and could use help.
First, I don't see a button to "Post" a new message. Only a "Reply" button, which is hoe I got here.
Second, I'm in desperate need of help with a class project. I have 3 penguins, a nervous penguin, a stranger and a mother. If the stranger gets closer to the nervous penguin than the mother, the nervous penguin should react. I know how to make the reaction of the nervous penguin method. But I don't know how to determine which penguin is closest to the nervous penguin to cause a reaction.
Do I write an event or a method. Details are always good.
thanks so much, I really appreciate your help.

See the proximity functions belonging to the world. You can use those functions to determine the distance between any two objects, etc.

I believe that you can start a new thread by selecting the general category in the top-level Alice forum directory and then clicking the button labeled something like New Thread. I also had some difficulty finding that button when I first joined the forum.
