I started with a small class, after that I new the basics of how to program in Alice (the interface, what variables/functions/ifelse statements were ect.), then I taught myself using others projects here on the forums how to make games, I now know alot about how to program in Alice (and the basics for other languages ie. what variables/functions/methods do and how stuff works at a basic level).
I suggest making at first making simple games, or 'modding' simple games. With this you can learn the basics of everything Alice has to offer, if you need help the forums has a few experienced members who are glad to help and assist you with anything your stuck on. (Also sfunk has a youtube channel with alot of good tutorials on it).
Hope this helps,
