Looking for 2 different cars

Hello, if anyone has a custom Nissan Skyline car or Lotus Elise car, would you please reply if you have any of them?

I'm guessing your going to have to use one of the generic cars in Alice because of the complexity of those two cars.

Two cars

Not the models you specifically asked for but should give you some variety plus a bit of experience importing models into Alice. Both were originally from the Tales Animator site – now defunct and - caution - infected with a virus. Note the license restrictions – primarily you can’t post them in an on-line library.

For Alice, import the .ase file and the .jpg texture. I included the .obj/.mtl files in case you want to edit them.

The Ferrari has a full object hierarchy, so you can rotate the wheels, etc. The Audi as is is just a single mesh. For the photo, I shrunk the original models by about 50X and adjusted the emmisive and spectral highlight parameters to get a “showroom” look.

Lots of car models are available and they usually convert ok with Biturn. If you have a conversion problem, just go to another model. Usually models this simple that don’t convert actually have mesh and/or texturing problems.

Note: You may get warning/error messages when you try to load the .ase files. Just hit cancel and ingnore them - they just tell you Alice can't read the textures directly.

Just took a quick look at some of my favorite web site for models and found a really nice selection (4 pages) of car models, see - http://archive3d.net/?category=28&page=1 . The models are all .3ds format when you download them. The same site has many other good models.

As John_Clark noted, the cars are pretty detailed models and converting them to a form useful in Alice takes a bit of work. I posted some comments regarding that at

Thanks for the cool cars

The cars you attached are pretty cool. The only downside is that they start out extremely large. These will work for the project I'm making for school. Thank you very much. ^.^

Large car models

"Large" models are something you are going to find with the free models like this on the web. They tend to be actual engineeriing mock-ups - or at least high resolution artwork - rather than models for Alice-type animations.

We're talking the difference here between a 640x480 typical viewing window and a 600 pixel per inch large engineering mock-up. The negative is a large physical model size - the positive is an incredible level of detail.

Usually "shrinking" a model doesn't cause much distortion - but obviously you will loose some detail. I usually try at least a 5x shrink per step - and often repeat that 2-3 times.

Note: A large initial model size can also give a "clipping" error when you try to have the camera "take a good look at ---". This is just because the object is to large to fit into the camera field of view - a shrink step or two will cause the problem to go away.

Thanks again ^.^

The attachment you sent for 3D models is amazing. I never thought they made sites like that one. There are so many awesome objects that i found in there. Thank you for guiding me to the site.

3D models on the web

Glad you liked the site - another good one is http://modelsbank.3dm3.com/ .

A couple of notes of caution. Many of the models on the sites are too big, to detailed, etc for use in Alice. Also, I have found there is quite a high percentage of models out there that have serious mesh and/or texture errors. The 3D stuff is not like the typical 2D "clip art" collections - where what you see is what you get. My suggestion is that if a model doesn't seem to be correct - move on to another one.

One of the other things you may have to worry about having a skyline in your program are copyright laws because it is copyrighted they do technically need to give you permission to use the car although you can change the name of the car to kind of get around that.
