tips- be original, smoth out all your code so the game actually runs without lag, if you understand camera control with mouse enough, try to incorporate it, if not try coming up with a clever aiming system, make enemies with simple code but worth the satisfaction of disposing of them, find good models to use.

Sounds interesting. Well, if you need reference for enviroments, look at my "Nature Scene", or Halo 1 or 2. Or for city, look at my mirrors edge game.
